CompTIA's Linux+ certification is intended for “technicians with six months experience installing, operating and maintaining Linux operating systems.” The Linux+, exam code XK0-001, was introduced in September 2001. It is an entry-level, vendor-neutral certification that makes a good starting point to higher level certifications, such as LPI, SAIR and RedHat. Although there are no prerequisites for this certification, CompTIA recommends that you possess the A+ and Network+ certifications.

This certification is well suited to network and system administrators, independent of what industry they work in. The Linux+ designation is achieved by passing one conventional format exam that “validates technical competency and provides a broad awareness of Linux operating systems.” The Linux+ certification thus demonstrates the candidate's knowledge of “installation, operation, administration and troubleshooting services.” Like other CompTIA offerings, once a person achieves the Linux+, the certification will not expire.
